Following the formation of the Dominion, the humans of Cassus began to expand their empire at an unprecedented rate. One of the earliest established Cassian colonies was on the planet Verdance, a primordial world teeming with mammalian reptiles. Of these creatures, the velocirex demonstrated the most diversity and the keenest intellect. Dominion officers, upon seeing the beasts in action, determined they would be ideal for use as combat mounts.

While the equivar was the mount of choice during the reign of the Cassian Commonwealth, it was quickly supplanted by the velocirex amongst the highborn of Cassus. Pure velocirex bloodlines have been established and the creatures are bred for a number of important qualities—speed, stamina, and ferocity being the most common. In the centuries since their discovery, velocirexes have become a symbol of Cassian expansionism and conquest.

Typical velocirexes are large, warm-blooded reptiles with green scales, cranial spines, and red eyes. They possess vicious teeth and a prominent under bite. Coloration varies depending on the individual velocirex species and its natural environment. Though not particularly bright when compared to equivars or woolies, velocirexes exhibit a predatory cunning that these other animals lack.

Trained velocirexes have a lifespan of 15 to 25 years.
